At Pinehurst, we’re not worried about the Mayans.
Instead, we continue to look forward to bringing you the best golf America has to offer. And to celebrate a different kind of countdown – less than 18 months and counting until the 2014 U.S. Open on Pinehurst No. 2 – we would like to present what you felt was the best news, notes, photos and videos to come out of Pinehurst this year.
The top 10 is determined by your visits, views and comments.
To whet your appetite (and to tempt those pesky Mayans even further), here are some honorable mentions that didn’t quite make the cut.
Pinehurst Resort’s state-of-the-art Short-Game Practice Complex began construction in August. Now open, the complex allows golfers to work on every level of the short game, from pitching to bunker play to chipping and putting, not to mention practice from the sandy waste areas so similar to the restored Pinehurst No. 2. For more about the evolution of the area, go here.
It is just another improvement to the practice area at Pinehurst, which includes the fun element of the game in the wildly popular 18-hole putting course, Thistle Dhu. The practice area even gives players a sense of what it’s like to play famed Pinehurst No. 2, even if they don’t have a tee time scheduled for that day on the course that will host unprecedented back-to-back U.S. Opens in 2014.
“It will have a taste of No. 2,” said Bob Farren, Pinehurst’s director of golf course and grounds management. “Those who come out to enjoy Pinehurst may not always get to play No. 2. But with this practice area, they’ll be able to get a real appreciation for what No. 2 is like.”

Today, Dec. 12, 2012, marks exactly 18 months before the start of the 2014 U.S. Open (June 12, 2014). Pinehurst, which has hosted more golf championships than anywhere in America, will once again make golf history beginning that day.
With famed Pinehurst No. 2 hosting unprecedented back-to-back U.S. Opens with 2014 Open and the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open, Pinehurst will become the only club to host all five major USGA events.
There’s no doubt that June 2014 will be a special time for Pinehurst and the world of golf.
Let the countdown begin.
18 months and counting…
