Taste of the New South, a food & wine weekend, will kick off in just a few days. Here’s a quick guide to get your ready for the weekend. See you soon.
(Silent) Auction: Silent Auction bidding will take place throughout the weekend in the Marketplace and close out Sunday night during the Culinary Tour of Pinehurst. The auction benefits the culinary program at Pinehurst High School and the hospitality programs at Sandhills Community College.
Barbecue: The Pinehurst culinary team is cooking up a 120-pound pig and more than a dozen pork shoulders for Friday’s Carolina Oyster Road & Pig Pickin’ at the Historic Pinehurst Fair Barn. The N.C. BBQ station will be serving up vinegar-based, yellow mustard and blueberry barbecue sauces, while the Korean BBQ station will feature kalbi, gochujang and doenjang sauces.
Craft beer: Try a variety of beers from half a dozen breweries including North Carolina-based Highland Brewing and Mother Earth Brewing. Out-of-towners will want to be sure to try samples from Rail House Brewery, which is just up the road in Aberdeen.
Demonstrations: Jake Wolf, chef and co-owner of Capital Club 16, will kick off the demonstrations with his Southern-Influenced, Old European-Style Brunch Demo on Saturday. Chef Brian Sonoskus will share a Taste of Tupelo Honey Café on Saturday afternoon.
Entertainment: The Asheville-based bluegrass band Fireside Collective will perform Friday during the Carolina Oyster Roast & Pig Pickin’. L Shape Lot, an Americana band based in country, rock, bluegrass and roots/folk music, will provide the music during Sunday’s Culinary Tour of Pinehurst.
Farm to fork: Our culinary team has scoured the region to find the best ingredients for Sunday’s Farm to Fork Brunch. Enjoy Southern breakfast and lunch specialties sourced from farmers within a 50-mile radius.
Gift bags: This year’s complimentary gift bags will include a Govino wine glass, donated by Acura, an oyster knife, fresh caramel corn and more!
Interact: Mingle with wine and beer experts, authors, chefs and fellow guests during Friday’s Welcome Reception. The event will feature more than two dozen wines, craft beers and tasty appetizers.
Judge: Play judge Friday during the Welcome Reception by keeping track of which wines and beers you liked and didn’t. We’ll provide tasting notes to make it easy.
KidsClub: Children aren’t permitted to attend the Taste of the New South events, but they can still tag along. Our KidsClub is a fun place for them to enjoy both indoor activities and trips to the pool. If you need arrangements for the evening events, you can reserve a babysitter 48 hours in advance. (Wine Down) Lounge: Stop by the Cardinal Ballroom from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening to enjoy the Wine Down Lounge. This is your chance to sample any fine wines and craft beers you haven’t tasted yet.
Marketplace: The Marketplace is your one-stop shop throughout the weekend. Drop by to purchase wine and craft beers at cost plus 10 percent. The Country Bookshop will also be on hand selling books by the featured authors and guest chefs.
Navigate: We’ve made it easy for you to find your way around. Check out the map in the event program to pinpoint where each session will take place. Signage throughout the Carolina Hotel will also guide you to Taste of the New South events.
Oysters: You’ll have multiple opportunities to learn about oysters throughout the weekend. Chef Dan Lewis, owner of Coastal Provisions, will share shucking and cooking tips during Friday’s Carolina Oyster Roast & Pig Pickin’. He’ll join Sommelier Sara Guterbock Saturday to talk about pairing wine and oysters during Wine & Brine.
Pinehurst Pale Ale: Our team worked with Asheville-based Highland Brewing Company to create a new beer especially for this event. Try Pinehurst Pale Ale during the Welcome Reception. If you like what you taste, you’ll be able to purchase a 32-ounce growler to take home. Click here to see our team taking part in the brewing process.

Real food: Join Lisa Leake on Saturday as she talks about the benefits of a real food diet. The author of “100 Days of Real Food” will explain how her family’s decision to avoid processed and refined foods has improved their overall health.
Sweet tooth: Those with a sweet tooth will be in heaven Friday at the Sinfully Southern Dessert Bar. Pinehurst Pastry Chef Shelly Taylor and her team will prepare an array of Confectionery delights including a cheesecake bar, pecan baklava, chocolate peanut butter torte, blackberry tiramisu., coconut cream pie, assorted crème brulee spoons and more.
Tailgate: Kick off the college football season with a Southern Tailgate Lunch. We’ll have the games on so you can root for your favorite teams while enjoying tailgate foods and an assortment of craft beers. You can also try your hand at traditional tailgate games like cornhole, ladder ball and the like.
Unique: Luis Torres will lead a unique interactive sessions Saturday. During the Creation of the Magnificent Meritage, Torres will guide you as your build your own wine from five classic Bordeaux grapes.
Vintner’s Dinner: The wine is the focal point of these intimate dinners. Each of the five courses expertly paired to complement the flavor profiles of the wine.
Walking Tour: Learn about the fascinating history of Pinehurst while sipping Beer Marys and Mimosas during Saturday’s Sip ‘n Stroll Historic Walking Tour. We’ll take you on a guided walking tour through the Village of Pinehurst. Beginning at the Carolina Hotel, we’ll wind our way through the charming streets of the Village, stopping for refreshments at The Holly Inn and ending with shopping at the unique boutiques.
(E) Xperience: Experience Thistle Dhu in a totally new way during Brews at Thistle Dhu. Our 18-hole putting course will be even more with a little friendly competition among friends. Sip a beer from Lagunitas Brewing Company while learning about the brewery’s creative backstory.
Yum: With their vast and varied backgrounds, the Pinehurst culinary team brings their French, Asian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern heritage to the foods they prepare for our guests in their restaurants. The Culinary Tour of Pinehurst is your opportunity to taste how they incorporate them into the menu.
Zoom: Leave your keys in the room and let us do the driving. Complimentary shuttle service will be available throughout the weekend and a number of Acuras will be on hand Friday evening to transport guests to and from the Fair Barn and the Carolina Hotel.
