No. 11 – Mitchum Plays Tour Event With a Heavy Heart

When Kelly Mitchum made the field of the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship, he did so by taking the place of Michael Townsend, who died tragically in a car crash before he could enjoy his dream of playing in a Tour event.

Mitchum, a longtime lead instructor at the Pinehurst Golf Academy, decided to raise awareness for his lost friend, donating money he earned at the tournament to a fund benefiting Townsend’s young family. It was a tremendous gesture by one of Pinehurst’s classiest people, and it did not go unnoticed.
