Pinehurst No. 5
Ellis Maples, 1961
Pinehurst and the Maples family are indelibly intertwined, and more so with this Ellis Maples design. Opened in 1961, No. 5 holds true to a key Ross feature - Mother Nature as the best guide in golf architecture. The course has more water hazards to negotiate than any other course at Pinehurst. What you'll see is a lot of variety in the layout - uphill and downhill, left-to-right and right-to-left, long and short par fours. Overall, it is a very playable, enjoyable 18 holes that will not disappoint.
| NO. 5 REOPENS AFTER A SIX-MONTH GREENS RENOVATION!
♦ The primary driver for the project was the improvement of the putting surface. The surface contours or grades of the greens did not change. We simply eradicated the older strains of contaminated turf by fumigation and reseeded with creeping bentgrass. The surface is now much more consistent with improved color, texture and ball roll characteristics. ♦ We improved the site lines on several holes by trimming a few trees. Examples include the left of the 4th and 12th holes. ♦ We "uncovered" one bunker on the right of the 18 fairway. We added two new bunkers on the left of the fairway landing zone and one on the front right of the green. |
