It began as a means to afford golfers a competitive arena and to generate publicity for a five-year old resort named Pinehurst. Its name was created to foster good relations between geographic regions that only a generation earlier had battled in the Civil War.
The mission over the years has been simple, according to Richard Tufts of Pinehurst's founding family: "To provide an annual gathering of these who love the game, rather than a spectacle."
Now named the Men's North & South Amateur Championship, it continues to be contested on Pinehurst's hallowed grounds each summer. The tournament is the longest consecutive-running amateur golf championship in the United States today, now in its 112th year.
Over the past century, the best in the golf world have vied for its coveted Putterboy Trophy. The winners now serve as legends in the game - Walter Travis, Francis-Ouimet, Billy Joe Patton, Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Corey Pavin, Davis Love II, among others. It continues to draw the best in amateur golf circles.
"Pinehurst has been a bastion of amateur golf for over a century," says Pinehurst President Don Padgett. "It is amateur golf at its best."

Championship Venue
For over 100 years the North & South Amateur has been contested on the famed Pinehurst No. 2. In the traditions of the Championship, Pinehurst No. 2 will continue to be part of this Championship. For 2012 Pinehurst No. 8 will host all stroke play rounds prior to playing all match play rounds on the historic No. 2 course.
